Many small business owners have come to rely on Facebook as their only presence on the web, and it is easy to see why. Facebook is free, it is easy to set up and use, and millions of people use it every day, but is it enough?
One reason that comes to mind that a Facebook page may not be enough is validity. Is this a valid business? Since Facebook is free, anyone can set up a business page. There is no investment in setting up a Facebook page, so some of the businesses that are on Facebook could be fakes or prank businesses. If a Facebook page is the only thing that you have representing your business on the web, many customers may not even know if you are a legitimate business. A website is an investment and a commitment to your business.
Facebook is very limiting. They have their way of doing things because, well, they are Facebook. It is their product after all. A website of your own can show the world the look and feel of your business in a way that Facebook will never be able to do. Facebook basically lets you show a cover photo, a profile picture, and your timeline feed, but let’s face it, everyone’s Facebook looks the same. There is no way to really individualize Facebook.
There are many useful ways that Facebook can be used for your business, but these tactics should be used in conjunction with your business’s website, not on their own, but that is the subject for another article.
