As web designers, we have to always be on the lookout for new trends. Every year, Pantone announces a color of the year. Fashion designers and interior decorators are supposed to stand up and take notice when Pantone delivers this color of the year. As a web designer, I am always curious too. The last several years, the colors have been bold. A couple of years ago, the color of the year was Radiant Orchid, a bright lilac color that seemed hard to imagine as a main color in anyone’s home, but could be very pretty as an accent color. Last year’s color was Marsala, and it was very, very…brown, not the most inspiring of colors.
This year Pantone did something different. Instead of one color, we have two colors of the year, Rose Quartz and Serenity, a pale pink and a pastel blue. According to Pantone, the HTML color values of these colors translate into the hex values of #F7CAC9 or #F2DDDE for Rose Quartz and #92A8D1 and #89ABE3 for Serenity. Why two different numbers for each color? There apparently are different Pantone color systems, so Pantone provides these as the closest match in their different color systems.
In the articles that I have read about the Pantone colors of the year, they have often talked about the swirling of these two colors together in a fluid, relaxing, calming way. I am sure you have noticed, they look an awful lot like baby nursery colors. Supposedly, fashion trends are showing the blurring of gender lines, and you are noticing more of this in modern culture in general. In design, we are noticing lots of watercolor type backgrounds on blogs and on places like Pinterest. The Rose Quartz and Serenity gradient swirl go along with that trend.
We have seen so much flat design in the past few years and have gotten away from gradient color. Maybe this is a trend going back to more blended color, but in a different way.
